RYA Cymru Wales Equipment Provision Criteria and Guidance
Updated October 2020
What is the RYA Cymru Wales Equipment Provision?
Sport Wales supports RYA Cymru Wales sailors in a variety of ways. Most years RYACW will receive funding to support sailors with a boat or with equipment.
Boat – this may include Optimist, Topper, Feva, Laser/ ILCA, 420, 29er, Nacra, Winsurfer (RSX and foiling)
Equipment – This may include, Sail, Spars, foils, mast Sections.
Equipment agreement
When sailors are offered equipment support the equipment is purchased by RYA Cymru Wales and is loaned to sailors on an annual contract.
The annual fee for a boat is – £300 per year
For sails and other equipment RYA Cymru Wales may cover all the costs or may offer a contribution towards the cost of the equipment.
If all of the costs are covered for sail/ spars/ foils/ mast sections the annual fee will be – £50 per year
A damage deposit of £75 is also taken to cover any damages when then equipment is returned after use.
Why is the Equipment provision important?
The provision will assist talented Welsh sailors who have been provided with a boat/equipment to offset the costs of extra training, coaching, event support and International event participation. It will also help sailors be competitive racing on new kit.
Who is eligible to apply for the Equipment?
Sailors at Junior, Youth and Academy level who are likely to be selected to represent Great Britain at European and International events can apply.

When is the Equipment provided?
Equipment is provided in March ready for sailors to use for racing. If a sailor needs the equipment before March e.g. for an event, this can be arranged.
For sailors who have previously received boats from the RYACW’s Boat and Equipment Provision Scheme, consideration will only be given to the provision of a new boat if it is deemed that they have the potential to medal on the international stage. However, they may be provided with equipment to ensure their current boat stays competitive within its second year (e.g. new sail, mast sections etc).
If it is a sailors’ last year in their chosen class and they are starting to transition, they will have a significantly reduced chance of receiving a new boat (it is likely they will keep their existing boat).
Note – only one sail / set sails may be provided per year. If a sailor has been provided with a sail/set sails and wishes to gain a second sail/set sails through their championship season, they will be able to purchase a second sail through RYACW at the reduced rate that the RYACW receives from the boat manufacturer.
How are the successful sailors chosen?
The decisions about which sailors will receive either a boat or equipment will be made on an annual basis by the Performance Manager and the Performance Sub Committee.
Successful sailors will be notified by the Performance Manager and we will work with you to choose the correct equipment.
Equipment Disposal
Once the RYA Cymru Wales equipment is no longer needed by the sailor the equipment needs to be returned in good working order damage free and with all the parts provided. The Damage deposit will be returned once the Performance Manager is happy with the equipment.
The equipment will then be sold following the RYA Cymru Wales Policy for the Disposal of Assets. Essentially the equipment is offered to Welsh sailors to purchase and then if not sold over a period of time the equipment is offered to the UK market.
For any questions on the equipment provision please contact the RYA Cymru Wales Performance Manager
