Welcome to Welsh Sailing Events

The WYA runs a full programme of events across Wales, and also support a number of other events that are run by clubs. Below is a quick guide to the events that happen each year in Wales.

The Club Youth Race Circuit (or better known as the CYRC series)

Each of the 3 regions (North, South & West) run a CYRC series. These are great first time events for aspiring racers which are coached. There are usually 5 or 6 CYRC’s in each region, and if you sail in more than 3 you are eligible for the overall series prize!

The Welsh Youth & Junior Championships

26th- 27th April 2014- CH Pwllheli SC

The main event! A great event to test out how much you you’ve improved over the winter; the first Welsh squads selector event and ideal warm up for those older sailors hoping to compete in the UK Youth Championships. There is a coached Regatta Fleet for younger & less experienced sailors.      2014 Results

The North Wales Schools Championships

28th June  2014 @ Llyn Brenig SC
This is a great event for all abilities and a fantastic opportunity to represent your school, club and county and pit yourself against sailors from around the whole of North Wales! For those attending their first event there is a fully coached regatta fleet. Run in conjunction with the 3rd event in the North Wales CYRC series

The RYA Welsh Zone Championships

27th & 28th September 2014

Run towards the end of the season in September; This is the most competitive regatta of the year and a must for sailors who are looking to gain places in Regional or National Squad! For those attending their first National Event there is a fully coached regatta fleet.  2013 results

The Welsh Open Laser Championships

12th & 13th July 2014

Cardiff Yacht Club are hosting the anual 2014 Welsh Open Laser Championships (youths and adults) – open to all Laser classes.

The Welsh Topper Championships

April 2014

Pwllheli Sailing Club are hosting the 2014 Welsh Topper Championships, ordinarily organised and run by Llandegfedd Sailing Club. This has proven to be a very popular event with over 50 Toppers regularly entering.  2013 Results


Spinlock IRC Welsh Championship

 The 2014 Spinlock IRC Welsh Championships which is scheduled between 1st August and 3rd August @ CH Pwllheli SC.  The open event will use the facilities of the Welsh National Sailing Academy and Event Centre and will draw on the skill and experience of the Academy’s event team who have a long and excellent record of hosting World, European and UK National Championships. The Welsh Optimist Championships

August 2014

Hosted annually by Cardiff Bay Yacht Club on the August Bank Holiday Weekend, this event regularly attracts the top optimist sailors in Britain! With Ice Skating and Swimming also offered in the evening, and even the odd parent race this is a must for oppie sailors! 2012 results 2013 Results


South Wales Acorn Llangorse OB Regatta & North Wales OB Festival

6th & 7th September 2014

These two events are aimed at our budding new sailors! The weekend is jam packed with coaching on the water and races, but the name of the game is to have fun! Most families camp on site and the Saturday night BBQ’s are now world famous!

Christmas Regatta’s

Each of the 3 regions also hold a Christmas Regatta hosted by a club within that region! Always good fun and prizes for best dressed boat, they are great events to get you in to the Christmas spirit!

 Open Club Events 2014

There are a variety of Open Club Events across the Country that are open to juniors, youths and adults. These events are run and administered by the host club.

Regional Volunteer Training and Workshops 2014

Volunteer training and courses in Wales including RYA courses such as Dinghy Instructor, Senior Instructor, Racing Coach Level 2, Start to Windsurf Instructor and Club and Regional Race Officer.

There are also a host of workshops available for club volunteers  including Sailwave, NSPCC Safeguarding and Child Protection, Disability Awareness and Disability Inclusion Training.
